VR Chariot Racing video game at Roman Circus in Merida

A two-player Virtual Reality chariot racing video game, installed at the Luxuria: Los placeres de Augusta Emerita interpretation centre. The setting features an accurate historical recreation of the Roman Circus of Mérida.

Developed in 2024 for the Mérida City Council, the “VR Chariot Racing” project is an innovative two-player virtual reality video game that transports users directly to the heart of the ancient Roman Empire. Featured within the permanent exhibition at the Mérida Open Museum (MAM), titled “Luxuria: The Pleasures of Augusta Emerita”, this installation delivers a rigorous and breathtaking historical recreation of the majestic Roman Circus of Mérida. Through this immersive experience, visitors to the interpretation centre cease to be mere spectators and step into the shoes of authentic charioteers, feeling firsthand the adrenaline, speed, and sheer intensity of the races that once captivated the ancient city—all while competing against the legendary Diocles, one of the highest-paid athletes in human history.

The convergence of Virtual Reality (VR) and gamification represents an unprecedented leap forward for historical recreation and heritage dissemination. On the one hand, the full immersion delivered by VR bridges the gap of centuries, allowing users to perceive the monumentality of Roman architecture at a 1:1 scale and truly experience its spatial atmosphere. On the other hand, gamification—by introducing game mechanics, interactivity, and head-to-head competition—transforms conventional passive learning into an engaging, dynamic journey. This playful and technological approach not only captivates younger generations far more effectively, but also triggers an emotional connection that makes historical knowledge truly memorable, proving that digital innovation is the greatest ally in keeping our cultural heritage alive.
